Second-order quadrupolar shifts as an NMR probe of fast molecular-scale dynamics in solids

چکیده
Molecular-scale dynamics on the nanosecond timescale or faster can have a measureable influence on isotropic NMR frequencies of quadrupolar nuclei. Although previously studied in solution, where it is usually referred to as the "dynamic shift", this effect is less well known in solids. Here we demonstrate that multiple-quantum NMR measurements of isotropic quadrupolar shifts are a simple way to probe nanosecond timescale motions in solids. We measure the B (spin I = 3/2) shifts of the resolved boron sites in ortho-carborane as a function of temperature and interpret the results in terms of the known rapid tumbling dynamics.

Measuring amide nitrogen quadrupolar coupling by high-resolution 14N/13C NMR correlation under magic-angle spinning.
The measurement of amide nitrogen 14N quadrupolar coupling by two-dimensional 14N/13C correlation experiment is presented with a natural abundant polypeptide. Directly bonded 14N/13C pairs are correlated through J and residual dipolar coupling under magic-angle spinning using a HMQC-type pulse sequence. The 14N quadrupolar coupling is measured from the isotropic second-order quadrupolar shift o...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei studied by QCPMG solid-state NMR experiments on static and rotating samples. Theory and simulations.
Simulations of QCPMG NMR type experiments have been used to explore dynamic processes of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solids. By setting up a theoretical approach that is well suited for efficient numerical simulations the QCPMG type experiments have been analyzed regarding the effect of the magnitude of the EFG- and CSA-tensors, the spin-quantum number, different dynamical processes and ...
متن کاملSeparate-local-field NMR spectroscopy on half-integer quadrupolar nuclei.
New approaches to the characterization of resonances in the solid-state NMR spectroscopy of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei are explored, on the basis of the acquisition of heteronuclear separate-local-field spectra on rotating solids. In their two-dimensional version, these experiments correlate for each chemical site a second-order quadrupolar MAS powder pattern with the dipolar MAS sideband ...
متن کاملNew tools in bio-NMR: indirect detection of nitrogen-14 in solids.
This paper presents an overview of recently developed methods for the indirect detection of 14N nuclei (spin l = 1) in spinning solids by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. These methods exploit the transfer of coherence from a neighboring 'spy' nucleus with spin S = 1/2, such as 13C or 1H, to single- or double-quantum transitions of 14N nuclei. The two-dimensional correlation methods pre...
متن کاملAll-atom molecular dynamics simulations using orientational constraints from anisotropic NMR samples
Orientational constraints obtained from solid state NMR experiments on anisotropic samples are used here in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for determining the structure and dynamics of several different membrane-bound molecules. The new MD technique is based on the inclusion of orientation dependent pseudo-forces in the COSMOS-NMR force field. These forces drive molecular rotations and re-...
